Choosing A Picture Blanket Photo

Whether you’ve decided to give someone a picture blanket as a gift or whether you’ve decided to preserve a special memory, person, or animal forever on a picture blanket, there are some important things you need to keep in mind when choosing which photo you’re going to use.
Here are three important things to keep in mind when choosing a picture blanket photo:

  1. Choose the right subject for your picture blanket. Picking the right subject of your photo is the most important part of the process. You want the subject of the picture to be something to be memorialized for a long time. This might be a person; it might be multiple people. It might be an animal. It might even be a place. Whatever you choose as the subject for your picture blanket you want to make sure the subject is large. You want the subject to take up the majority of the picture.

Why is this important? For a couple of reasons. First of all, a picture blanket with a small subject just doesn’t look as good. It may look too busy, or it may be hard to tell exactly what the picture is supposed to be of. In addition, choosing a picture with a large subject will help you to get more detail out of your picture blanket, too.

The subject should fill the majority of the picture. Ideally, you’ll want the subject to fill at least two thirds of the picture, perhaps as much as 80% of the picture. This will insure that your picture blanket has a recognizable and detailed subject.

  1. Choose a photo to which you hold the copyright. Many times, family photos that are done by a professional studio are actually owned by the studio. Make sure you check with the studio before you have a professional photograph made into a picture blanket. In many cases, the studio may allow you to do this sort of thing free of charge, but in other cases they may not. Making a picture blanket from a copyrighted photo without permission is illegal.

  2. Pay close attention to color, contrast, and focus in your photo. Your picture blanket needs to have realistic colors that closely resemble real-life colors. You don’t want a faded picture, for example. You might even consider taking the picture and comparing it to the real-life subject. If the colors in the photo aren’t a close match to those of the actual subject it is probably worth picking a different photo to use for the picture blanket.

The same holds true for contrast. You want a photo for your picture blanket that has plenty of contrast and detail. You want to make sure that there is a clear differentiation between dark and light. For example, you might choose a well-lit picture that has a darker background, or vice versa.

Excellent focus is also an important part of choosing the right photo. While the process of making the picture blanket does allow for some sharpening, the fact of the matter is that the best photos will already be crisp to begin with.
